What a bloody shame! I hold no brief for Gopal Subramaniam. It really does not matter to me whether he gets appointed a judge of the Supreme court of India or not. What matters to me is, that the government which promised to be different from its predecessors in upholding and strengthening the rule of law has resorted to such lowly measures to malign Subramaniam just so they can try scuttle his appointment to the bench. By withdrawing his candidacy for the bench, GS has responded to controversy in a dignified manner. It will not be out of place to mention that the same BJP had fought a similarly dirty battle in the case of appointment of the Lokpal for the state of Gujarat.
