What is the most valuable asset to you as a competitive grappler? GOOD TRAINING PARTNERS!!! This is why i almost exclusively( unless i know them well) train with guys in or near my own weight class. This is a sport, in football you dont have your kickers training with your linebackers do you now? The reason being is they both play the same game, yet represent different aspects of its skill. Same goes for big guys, pick on someone your own size :). No seriously, your not gonna gain anything by being a fat ass and laying on your partner, you need someone who is gonna make you use technique, not your weight. In my case I have found when i become a threat to big guys, they become DESPERATE not to be tapped by a smaller guy and start going nuts. This is how I got a torn trap, both rotator cuffs, a slipped disk and so on. I Caught a brown belt in a foot lock years ago during class, after he had taken my back. He was a big guy and got so pissed off about it he slammed me on my face and jumped on my back again. He tried to slam the choke on and ended up putting his arm in my mouth. The only thing i could do t keep my jaw from being broken was to bite down as hard as i could, and nothing will turn a large bodybuilder into a screaming girl quicker than having a chunk removed from his forearm via bite :). Anyway, My brother knows my game inside and out. So when me and him actually catch each other we have to do it fast and correctly. Same goes with some of my other training partners. Your never gonna get better by sparring people you always tap, you NEED TO BE TAPPED in order to get better. I guarantee if you put up an intermediate guy who is constantly being pushed and challenged in the gym against a black belt who never spars with anyone who he thinks can beat him and the int guy will have a damn good chance at winning.
