When folks complain of noise when trying to sleep I am, admittedly, entirely devoid of sympathy. I think this is because when growing up, every night, was either filled with the sound of fighting or the sound of the trumpet. My dad, he explained to us, used to love the jazz trumpet and so pulled it out every once in a while. There were many more nights of fighting though. After he died I was shown my fathers scrap book. I couldnt believe it. He had run his own band at the age of 12 and was considered one of the worlds best up and coming jazz trumpeters. He played large clubs. Then he was drafted to the Vietnam War and afterwards just wanted to marry my mother and have a family. To do this he took a job selling insurance, and that made him miserable. He died at 48. I remember his trumpet playing above and in front of some of the best musicians of the 70 s and 80s. That is what I remember falling asleep to. So when you ask me why I write childrens songs instead of just getting a real job, my answer is this: if I have kids they are going to fall asleep to nothing but the sound of my out of key awful voice singing. Maybe with a harmony, if I can find a girl ok with me never selling insurance.
