Where is the food you eat native to? I am tired of eating food - TopicsExpress

Where is the food you eat native to? I am tired of eating food grown in Australia but native to everywhere else in the world.... things like lettuce, apples, lamb, rosemary...none of them are Australian. We should be eating more of the plants and animals from OUR country, MY country: Australia. I eat kangaroo and wallaby which are both incredibly healthy meats from animals living free and wild; not farmed, not bred or changed in any way by humans, simply shot by professional marksmen according to strict guidelines and quotas. I eat a few Australian herbs such as lemon myrtle, Tasmanian pepperberry and wattleseed (which tastes like chocolate, coffee and nutella!!) but mostly I eat plants and animals not native to my land. Aboriginal people lived here for more than 50,000 years, before my ancestors arrived from Britain less than 250 years ago. Aboriginal people did not "farm" but in some areas they influenced what grew naturally by their clever use of fire. By encouraging fresh plant growth after fire, they knew this would bring animals to graze the land; animals they would then hunt. They knew it would encourage certain plants to put on fresh growth that would be their salads, next time they came that way. So, while they were away foraging elsewhere, their food was growing back, behind them.... pretty smart thinking! Aboriginal people lived from the land for 50,000 years. They worked with the land and took what was prolific, always leaving enough to regrow for later. Their culture taught them to take care of the land, not to own it. We have a lot to learn from them.
