~ Why I DONT make candles from SOY. ~ I will be launching my NEW candle range shortly but before I do I wanted to explain why I DO NOT make soy candles. I wont write an essay though my research has been thorough. So here are a few main points as to why I do not make or support, the production of soy candles. 1: Brazil manufactures 81 billion TON of soy each year contributing to the current rapid loss of Brazilian forests. 2: Soy wax contributes to deforestation but it also contains a load of chemicals that are part of the manufacturing process of soy wax. Including bleach, chlorine, hexine and others I cant even pronounce. Parrafin is full of chemicals that are bad for your health and shouldnt really be burned at all. Soy in comparrison is not far behind. The amount of toxins in them is dynamic. Wics are also soaked in spirits and chemicals. Commercially made cotton candle wicks are soaked in mineral spirits and other proprietary chemicals to enhance capillary action to increase burn times. 3: You CAN NOT BLEND natural oils with soy because they are not compatible as they are too different in makeup. So only chemical or fake essences can be used with soy because they are the only ones that blend & dissolve. They are not in any way natural. In its raw state, soy wax does not hold dyes or fragrance or other waxes, so most soy candle makers use a variety of other chemically derived additives to increase the solubility of the wax with the scents and dyes to enhance fragrance hot throw and color. In order to know what chemicals are in a specific soy candle you would have to get your candle maker to tell you. Hexane Derived Products to be Banned. The current soy candle controversy comes on the heels of environmental groups calling for hexane-derived soy products to be removed from the U.S. Department of Agricultures national list of approved substances for use in organically labeled products. Based on a growing body of evidence, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine called for an immediate ban on all hexane derived GMO soy products. An investigative report by Cornucopia and Natural News has revealed that soy products touted as organic may not be 100% natural. It turns out that soy products are bathed in hexane, , a gasoline by-product that is particularly volatile. Hexane based solvents are used to bathe soy products during processing. The Cornucopia Institutes report calledBehind the Bean reveals higher than expected levels of hexane contamination in natural brand name soy products. The Cornucopia report exposes the dirty little secret of the natural soy foods industry: the widespread use of hexane in processing. The candles I am about to launch are made entirely from natural ingredients. Not ONE ingredient in them that can harm you. In fact you could actually eat one of my candles and youd be fine. They are 100% natural, smell beautiful & look stunning. I do not soak my wicks. I use only natural cotton & hemp. I look forward to sharing them with you. ♥ Red Lily
