With the holidays approaching like a speeding locomotive, Eric and I are trying to make good choices about charitable organizations to give help to. The local food shelves are always in need. But donating store bought boxed and canned items that only makes one meal for someone doesnt make the most sense to me. I thought about how many meals can be prepared from a bag of macaroni, a 5 lb. bag of potatoes, a bag or box of rice, a bag of flour, etc. How many different meals could be prepared from a 5 lb. bag of potatoes? I am not a great cook, but even I can come up with at least a half dozen ideas. Maybe someone could create a cookbook with meal-stretching ideas specifically tailored to helping people make the most out of the food items they receive from a food shelf? I am thankful that I have never needed to go to a food shelf, but I know people who do. Donating boxes of Hamburger or Tuna Helper doesnt seem like a good choice to donate since a box only provides one or maybe two meals and then there is the cost of buying the Hamburger or the Tuna which would be a financial strain. It seems that a bag of macaroni would go much further if one is creative. One can make their own bread with a bag of flour and a few other ingredients that are not costly. But one would have to know how. So a recipe book that is specifically created for people to make the most out of donated items from a food shelf would seem to have far-reaching benefits for those who depend on a food shelf to get through hard times. I am not a cook. So I am not the one to do it. But Id like to see someone who has the skills and talent do it.
