With the passing of a fellow brother this past week caused by an electrical accident from what i understand was caused by a shared neutral on a 277 volt circuit. I dont know all the details of what happened so if anyone cares to share feel free. To bring knowledge to anyone that doesnt know 2 circuits that share the same neutral should be on a 2 pole circuit breaker so that both circuits are deenergized before working on either of them. Tick tracers are handy but are not reliable, circuits should be checked with a volt meter. Using a voltage meter you should check hot to ground, hot to neutral, and neutral to ground. Note that checking neutral to ground will not show a reading if the neutral is shared. To ensure that your not working on a circuit with a shared neutral, you should check the neutral with an amp probe or amp clamp. With that you should see the fluctuation of amperage on your meter. This is the unbalanced load returning to the panel. Know that if you see this that chances are the circuit has a shared neutral. I dont know everything and if anyone has anything to add or any corrections of this post feel free to add them. Be safe everyone, i dont want to lose anymore brothers.
