Womens preview: Sun Belt Conference 0rn.co/gd2 College Women Stina Resen enters the spring as one of the top players in the Sun Belt Conference. ( Courtesy of UALR ) By Andy Zunz Tuesday, January 20, 2015 Editors note: College golf is dormant in January, so let Golfweeks annual conference preview series serve as a bridge to the spring season. Here youll find fall highlights and spring predictions for each conference with an automatic qualifying spot in the postseason. The series (read all stories here) runs from Jan. 12 to Feb. 11. o o o Sun Belt Conference o Conference championship: April 13-15, Steelwood Country Club, Loxley, Ala. o Defending champion: Troy o Conference members (Golfweek ranking in parentheses): Troy (84), Texas State (100), Arkansas-Little Rock (103), Appalachian State (138), Arkansas State (143), Georgia State (158), Louisiana-Monroe (159) and South Alabama (168) o Conference favorite: Troy. The Sun Belt is a balanced conference, with a thin margin separating the top-ranked team and the last-ranked team - 84 ranking spots, to be exact. With that being said, give the defending champion the benefit of the doubt. Troy brings returned every golfer from that title-winning team, most notably Sun Belt individual champion Fatima Fernandez Cano. Five Trojans own a sub-78 scoring average and have placed in the top 10 at least once. The highlight of the fall came at the Chris Banister Golf Classic, where Troy won by 16 strokes. o Could challenge: Arkansas-Little Rock performed solidly in each of its five fall tournaments. These Trojans finished outside the top 5 only once - sixth at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational - and have one of the conferences top players in Stina Resen. The junior from Norway earned four top 5s in her first four events this season. o Texas State. While you could choose from a handful of teams, Texas State deserves credit for playing a brutal fall slate. The Bobcats rank 39th in strength of schedule, according to the /Sagarin College Ranking. Thats very high for a Sun Belt program. In fact, Georgia State is the only other conference opponent to be ranked in the top 100 and it sits at 89th, well behind Texas State. The 2014 Sun Belt Conference runner-up returns All-Conference senior Lejan Lewthwaite, who will bring a veteran presence to the squad. o Midseason All-Conference team: Stina Resen, UALR (junior); Fatima Fernandez Cano, Troy (sophomore); Iman Nordin, Texas State (senior); Langley Vannoy, Troy (senior) and Lora Assad, Texas State (junior) Jan 20, 2015 Demo Day: Griffey, Longwell hit shots at Nike booth Jan 20, 2015 PGA Show: Bubba Watson at Demo Day Jan 20, 2015 Complete Coverage: PGA Merchandise Show Jan 20, 2015 SeeMore to debut fitting system at PGA Show Jan 20, 2015 Streamsong picks Hanse to add third course Jan 20, 2015 Waffle House picks up LPGAs Brooke Pancake Jan 20, 2015 Womens preview: Sun Belt Conference Jan 19, 2015 New voice emerges in Allenbys abduction Jan 19, 2015 Bubba Watson buys share of minor-league Wahoos Jan 19, 2015 Golf Channel plans Phoenix lead-up to Super Bowl Jan 19, 2015 Kozan earns Tour start with Puerto Rico win Jan 19, 2015 British Open should stick with BBC, says HSBC Jan 19, 2015 Illinois commitment takes Feagles north Jan 19, 2015 Tiger Woods missing tooth remains a mystery Jan 19, 2015 Dominguez turns doubts into Masters berth College Women Womens preview: Big South Conference By Andy Zunz Coastal Carolina and Campbell stand out as the two top teams in the Big South Conference as womens college golf gets set to resume in the spring.
