Wooden Horse Magazine Media News of February 16, 2014 outstanding resource if you are not already familiar... WOODEN HORSE MAGAZINE MEDIA NEWS February 16, 2014 By Meg Weaver, Editor-in-Chief/Publisher, mweaver@woodenhorsepub woodenhorsepub Copyright (c) 2014 Wooden Horse Publishing ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ * indicates magazines in the Wooden Horse Magazines Database - the media directory thats more like a magazine factbook ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can click on all shortened links in this newsletter with confidence. We have created the links ourselves; we have visited the site; we have tested the link, and we let you know where the link will take you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear readers, Hearst laid an egg this week. And it wasn’t a small, delicate quail egg; it was a big, fat whale egg (if they laid eggs.) DR. OZ THE GOOD LIFE magazine from Hearst launched Feb 4, but few of us didn’t see it until this week and found that Hearst’s editors took a reportedly warm, charismatic man and melted him down into a generic wax doll, not unlike a 1970’s game show emcee. Folio: magazine, the industry magazine for magazine managers, called the cover “disappointing and…one of the weakest covers of a major magazine launch in recent memory.” The rest is not any better: How to lose weight, get soft skin, make more money, de-stress – it’s the same generic fluff that you can find in any women’s service magazine. Better luck next time, Hearst (planned for April 15 on the newsstand.) You can see the cover on our Magazines Cover Pinterest board. Elsewhere in the industry: PORTER, the fashion print magazine from online luxury retailer Net-A-Porter, has launched. The magazines digital edition launched Friday. Some – but not all – products in the magazine can be purchased from the Net-A-Porter site. The editorial is not unlike other fashion magazines with a well-known model on the cover, a feature on actress Uma Thurman, and various fashion spreads. An annual subscription of six issues will set you back $48 and a single issue is $9.95. It will be distributed in 60 countries and published in American English. Its editor in chief is Lucy Yeomans, formerly of British Harper’s Bazaar… FIRE CHIEF magazine has been acquired by The Praetorian Group, which will relaunch the title as digital-only in late February… SEA KAYAKER has ceased publication after 30 years and 158 issues. The publisher, Sea Kayaker Inc, will continue to offer various events as well as a new digital publication, Open Water, an alternative online journal for all paddle sports… CONCRETE CONTRACTOR, QUALIFIED REMODELER and ten other magazines are for sale by Cygnus Business Media… PEOPLE* magazine is continuing to bleed top editors. This week, Deputy Editor Peter Castro announced that he is leaving. Last month Managing Editor (i..e. Editor-in-Chief) Larry Hackett left after eight years and was replaced by Jess Cagle. There has been no replacement for Castro announced, but count on changes with two new top editors… WIRELESS WEEK, ECN and FOOD MANUFACTURING from Advantage Business Media have a new owner, Austin-based private-equity firm Owner Resource Group… Glam Media, owner of websites Glam, Tend, Bliss, Brash, and Foodie, is looking for a new name. Feeling the company has become too identified with women and fashion, the success of Foodie showed co-founder and CEO Samir Arora that the company can attract men as well as women. Glam will continue as one “vertical” and the Glam website will remain. The new company name has not been decided… DEPARTURES* magazine has - for the first time - a fashion and style director, former New York Times T Magazine online director Horacio Silva, no email yet. The hiring of Silva makes it clear that the magazine will intensify its coverage of fashion… Mashable – also for the first time – has a real-time news editor, Brian Ries. “At Mashable, we’re highly skilled at creating sharable stories and optimizing them for the social web. Now, a key focus for us is to bring the best of the social web to Mashable, and all our channels, in real-time,” said Jim Roberts, chief content officer and executive editor. “Brian will be a great asset to lead us in this new chapter.”… Media News especially for PR professionals and small business owners seeking publicity: “AC360 Later”, a panel discussion on CNN with Anderson Cooper as host, will cease production. It started as a late night experiment last year and never aired regularly. Cooper will remain with CNN and his other program, AC360… HLN, the former Headline News, will be repositioned around social media to attract young viewers who currently don’t watch news on TV at all. “Our headlines are going to be ripped from social media,” executive vice president of HLN, Albie Hecht has said. Buzzfeed pointed out that “HLN is already defining itself in Google searches as ‘a national television network that focuses on the must-see, must-share stories of the day.’”… “The X Factor”, the Simon Cowell-led TV talent show on Fox, is canceled after completing the program’s third season… “@THISHOUR” is the name of the new 11amET show on CNN and is anchored by John Berman and Michaela Pereira. It is part of CNN’s revamped daytime lineup… Finally: Esquire* magazine really wanted their March cover man, actor Peter Dinklage of HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones,’ look good. Fashion director Nick Sullivan asked Giorgio Armani to dress him in a custom-made suit.. But did they get the measurements right? Or has “Dink” grown a swell head? You can see the final results on our Pinterest board “Magazine Covers.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ * indicates magazines in the Wooden Horse Magazines Database - the media directory thats more like a magazine factbook ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MESSAGES FROM MEG__________________________ We are slowly coming back from the flu and the other assorted illnesses we were afflicted with. The weather hasn’t improved, rather the opposite, but at least the snow is gone. Softie that I am, I filled the hummingbird feeder and hung it outside during the coldest days (had to take it in during the night or it would have been a frozen lump.) The bully kept up his nasty behavior, but the others were so hungry they ignored him and I soon had everybody fighting for an empty place to feed. This week we have two new posts in Working Smarter, our wanna-be blog. On Tuesday I posted information about measuring your promotional campaigns. If you have never measured any of your promotions, this is a good place to start. On Thursday I dug up an interesting article that, I think, can help move Facebook followers to your website. That has universally been frustrating for merchants of all sizes, including you and me. You can hoard Facebook followers on Facebook, but it’s very difficult to motivate them to visit your website, which is where you want them if they are to buy. You can find links to both articles – and my comments - in Working Smarter. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PEOPLE CHANGES_______________________________ Military Times has a new reporter covering Veteran affairs, Leo Shane, no email yet, @LeoShane… Houston Business Journal has a new money and finance reporter, Mark Yost, myost@bizjournals, @AuthorMarkYost… Bloomberg News has a new reporter at the White House, Angela Greiling Keane, [email protected], @agreilingkeane… MacWorld* magazine is without Executive Editor Jonathan Seff… Country Living* has named Lauren Matthews, laurenmatthews@hearst, @laurenamatthews as senior web editor… ABCs Nightline has a new executive producer, Almin Karamehmedovic, @karameha… Popular Mechanics* has promoted Andrew Del-Colle, adelcolle@hearst, @andrewdelcolle to senior editor… Freeskier magazine has a new editor, Henrik Lampert, henrik@freeskier, @HankLambo… Columbus Dispatch has a new features reporter, Jeannie Nuss, jnuss@dispatch., @JeannieNuss… The Meredith Vieira Show, set to launch in fall 2014, has an executive producer, Rich Sirop, no email yet… Inc* magazine has a new editor-in-chief, Eric Schurenberg, eschurenberg@inc., @EricSchurenberg… Digiday, the site about digital publishing, has a new digital publishing reporter, Ricardo Bilton, ricardo@digiday, @rbilton… RollingStone has a new news editor, Jason Newman, jason.newman@rollingstone, @Jasonrnewman… FiveThirtyEight has a new general editor and social media coordinator, Carla Correa, carlacorrea@gmail, @pinkgrammar… FiveThirtyEight has a new features editor starting Feb 20, Lisa Chow, 538dotcom@gmail, @lisaechow… Fast Co Labs, the Fast Company blog about software and coding, has a new writer, Adam Popescu, apopescu@fastcompany, @adampopescu… Family Circle* has a brand new position, lifestyle editor, and appointed Suzanne Rust, srust17@aol...
