Wow. King Richard II at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre was amazing! The production values were truly stunning--minimalist but beautifully effective sets with period costumes and simple but evocative trumpet fanfares together with a chorus of three women singing period music. And the performances across the board, from David Tennant in the title role to the smallest supporting players, were outstanding. No forced and gimmicky concept, just Shakespeare at its best. Earlier today we toured around the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, including visits to Anne Hathaways Cottage and Shakespeares Birthplace. After stopping for tea and scones, we made the pilgrimage to Holy Trinity Church, site of Shakespeares grave. The oldest remaining parts of the church were built in 1210. Situated on the banks of the River Avon and surrounded by the old graveyard and beautiful English countryside in full autumn splendor, the site is truly inspiring. Tomorrow to Warwick Castle!
