Yesterday I bought 3 books which cost so much that I doubt I will buy any more books. There are more black voices now on Exclusive shelves. (1) Liberation Diaries: Reflections on 20 Years of Democracy edited by Busani Ngcaweni. I like the contribution I write for the Invisible Ones by Amanda Dlamini who says ..yet often we underestimate the plight of the ordinary person, who never spent decades in prison, will never have streets named after them and will never even get acknowledged for the price they had to pay for this new South Africa. (2) The Second Coming - The Life and Times of Pixley ke Isaka Seme by Moss Mashamaite. He writes in what he rightly calls florid and flowing English which can be difficult but is never without substance and provocation. (3) Dare We Hope - Facing Our Past to find a New Future by Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela who also wrote A Human Being Died that Night remains a clear and and compassionate thinker. These are articles written over the past few years and she says It is a gruesome tale - how we have moved so rapidly from the era of hope to the bleak landscape ushered in by Zumas ascent to power... Yet she rekindles our hope.
