Yesterday we said goodbye to the dearest of souls. Our 19 year - TopicsExpress

Yesterday we said goodbye to the dearest of souls. Our 19 year old potbelly pig, Byron is gone. When we first started doing tours at the Oasis Camel Dairy, we were worried how we would compete with such an amazing attraction like the San Diego Wild Animal Park with all its exotic animals. And then at our VERY FIRST TOUR, over 12 years ago, the guests arrived and immediately began shrieking with joy; they have a pig! That was the last time we worried about that! Byron did not live in a corral or pen but had the run of the farm and a BIG dog house with a blanket to retreat to at night. In his younger years, you could look out the window and see him walking up the driveway to investigate the other animal areas and you could always tell which tree had the ripest fruit by wear Byron was sleeping during the day. He would lay under the apple tree, dead asleep.. you could run the lawnmower past him and he wouldnt so much as twitch. But if a ripe apple fell to the ground, he was up and on it in a moment. After any rain you could see earth and grass upturned by his amazing nose and find him laying under the acacia in a bed of leaves he would make for himself. He recycled at least 80 percent of our kitchen waste! He ate all our leftovers and then some! One time, we had a tour group of kids here eating lunch and I made the mistake of telling one child that if he didnt want the rest of his apple, we could give it to Byron. Well, over the next 20 minutes, the kids had put together an amazing smorgasbord of leftovers. Then we all gathered around and gave Byron a big bon apatite! He loved his belly scratched. I cant imagine that anyone who ever visited us didnt meet Byron. If you have any Byron pics from your visits, we would LOVE to see them! Rest in Peace our noble, benevolent friend.
