You consult with a surgeon who you hand picked. You like him/her - TopicsExpress

You consult with a surgeon who you hand picked. You like him/her and trust them. You schedule the surgery. Are they the ones who really do it? Maybe NOT if you are at a teaching hospital! Many hospitals ARE teaching hospitals these days - places where residents come to learn in their field by practicing on well.....YOU! Of course they need to learn and yes we want new doctors trained and experienced, but I say, let them practice on someone else! How can you be SURE you get the dr. you expected and no one else?? Ask. During the consult confirm it will be THAT Dr. and only that Dr. If they cannot confirm for you clearly that it will be them - alone - performing the surgery, express your concerns and wishes. If you cannot get a guarantee that your chosen physician will be performing the surgery, time to move on to another Dr. and another hospital. Watch out for those informed consent forms! Prior to the admission and on the day of! READ THEM! If any say anything like anticipated dr. or member of the team or physician from the dept. etc - dont sign it. CROSEE IT OUT and hand write in - DR. SMITH and ONLY DR. SMITH is to perform my surgery and NO ONE ELSE otherwise I DO NOT consent to anything! This makes it clear legally, as well, what your wishes are and will make it difficult to deviate from that request in black and white! Dont let the Bait and Switch game be played on you when it comes to your healthcare!!
