You know... I just posted this as a comment on a friends page, but I want to share it with everyone because even after a decent nighta sleep Im still bothered by just how awful Peter Pan Live was last night... All NBC has done with Sound of Music Live and now Peter Pan Live is bastardize the true theatrical experience and crush it for a casual audience with horrible casting and cramped choreography to fit inside the camera lens. If people were sitting on the fence about going to see a live show and watched that mess last night, theyll never go to the theatre now. Its not cheap to go see professional productions and people are going to just leave their wallets in their pockets (assuming they have pockets ;-) and say no thanks after that debacle. Why cant networks just do it like they did for the Bernadette Peters version of Into the Woods 25 years ago where they filmed a couple previews on stage in front of live audiences and put it on film? At least that gives a more realistic theatrical experience. I know some theatre folks rail on movies like Mamma Mia and Les Miserables (and likely will again when Into the Woods opens on Christmas) about certain casting decisions and script changes and the like, but at least they bring the music to the masses in an appealing fashion. What NBC has given us is an awkward, uninspired and rather awful presentation of two beloved musicals that sadly has set theatre backward publicly. In closing, friends, if you are not really the theatre-going type and you happened to catch even a smidgen of that train wreck last night do me a favor and trust me - THAT is NOT what its like at a live show. Give it a shot. Go see a real production, whether it be professional, semi-professional or a good community theatre. And then decide for yourself if the experience is worth it. All right... Im off the soap box...
