Yvette Cooper - dishonest gender bigot. Labour to make domestic violence a specific offence ...Sounds OK so far, but you already know where this is going... The coalition government has allowed more than 10,000 perpetrators of domestic violence to get away with an apology and slap on the wrist, Yvette Cooper, the shadow home secretary, will say on Monday. ...This might indeed sound alarming without any context or perspective, but as this report in The Telegraph {tinyurl/qewu58n} points out, these so-called community resolutions to which she refers are employed in less than 0.7% of the total number of domestic violence incidents. If we also take into consideration the fact, related in the Guardian article, that the definition of domestic violence now includes coercive control, bullying, keeping a person short of money, that sort of thing, these figures are likely nowhere near as shocking as they initially appear. As the Association of Chief Police Officers states : these are only appropriate for crimes such as low level criminal damage, low value theft, minor assaults without injury and anti-social behaviour. ...but now that weve had the set up, heres the sting... Labour has promised to bring in a violence against women and girls bill that would end the use of community resolutions in cases of domestic violence. These figures are deeply worrying, she said. Domestic violence is an incredibly serious crime. Two women a week are killed by their partner or an ex and 750,000 children will grow up witnessing domestic violence. For the police to simply take a violent abuser home to apologise risks making domestic violence worse, and makes it even harder for victims to escape a cycle of abuse. So there it is - an entirely dishonest, disingenuous use of figures to justify the proposal of a gender-biased approach to domestic violence. As The Guardian itself has reported {tinyurl/pbzzsrp}, more than 40% of victims of domestic violence are men. It is also the case that males as a whole are far more likely than females to be victims of violent crime in a more general sense. And yet once again we see feminist campaigners, this time in the guise of a politician who might soon become the UKs next Home Secretary, pushing the male perpetrator/female victim narrative, and pursuing the interests of only one half of the population. This is not to deny or diminish the serious nature of the crime of domestic violence, whomever the victim and victimiser. However, is it too much to expect some honesty from our parliamentarians, or to presume that they would enact legislation based on the whole picture, and not just the pieces they select for ideological convenience? Where gender bigots like Ms. Cooper are concerned, obviously it is. Guardian article : tinyurl/oca7hs8 ~ Tim
