The National Education Day of India was celebrated on 11 November 2013 at Gangtok, Sikkim.It has been celebrated in India since the year 2008 to commemorate the anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, a great freedom fighter, an eminent educationist and the first Education Minister of India. On the occasion of the National Education Day of India, the President of India Pranab Mukherjee will inaugurate the 40th Jawaharlal Nehru National Science, Mathematics and Environment Exhibition. The theme of the exhibition will be Science and Society. 2. Union Minister of Minority Affairs K Rahman Khan on 11 November 2013 launched a National Portal on Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. The portal was inaugurated to mark 125th birth anniversary of the great national leader- Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. This portal is an initiative to digitise the heritage of the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, and make his life and legacy available online. 3. The V.C. Padmanabhan Memorial Award 2013 for Ecology and Environment Conservation was presented to eminent ecologist and environmental scientist Madhav Gadgil in Thrissur. The award carries a cash prize of Rs1 lakh, a bronze plaque and a citation. 4. Exit Polls banned till 4th December. Election Commission has banned the publication and dissemination of exit polls of any kind in the five poll bound states from 11th November till 4th December, when the Assembly elections are over. The Commission has also banned the publication of results of any opinion polls 48 hours before polling in a state. 5. SC Stays Gauhati HC verdict terming CBI as unconstitutional. In a huge relief to the Centre and the CBI, the Supreme Court on Saturday stayed the Gauhati High court verdict declaring the agency as unconstitutional, saying accused in sensational cases have sought halting of the criminal proceedings based on that judgement. 6. Prince Charles, wife on 4-day visit to Kerala from tomorrow. A visit to the Jewish Synagogue at nearby Mattancherry, the oldest synagogue in the Commonwealth, and a trip to the elephant corridor at Vazhachal will be the highlights of the four-day visit of Prince Charles and his wife Camilla Parker Bowles to Kerala, starting tomorrow. 7. India, Korea discuss ways to boost bilateral ties. During the 7th India-Republic of Korea Joint Commission Meeting (JCM), co-chaired by External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid and his Korean counterpart Yun Byung-se, the two sides conducted a comprehensive review of bilateral relations, which have been upgraded to a Strategic Partnership and have acquired range and depth over the past few years. 8. Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Monday signed a roadmap agreement to allow inspectors broader access to nuclear sites. 9. The Government of Afghanistan on 10 November 2013 signed an agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the development of road network in the country at a cost of 220 million US dollar. The agreement was signed between Afghan Finance Minister Dr. Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal and the ADB Country Director Joji Tokeshi in Kabul. 10. Ministry of Home Affairs on 9 November 2013 inaugurated RAF Academy of Public Order in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. This academy will train personnel of Rapid Action Force along with selected members of other paramilitary forces and civil police. 11. Bhagat Puran Singh Sehat Beema Yojna (BPSSBY) Health care scheme for BPL families launched in Punjab. Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today launched a cashless health care scheme for BPL families, which would provide free medical services of up to Rs 30,000 per annum. 12. Regional Pravasi Bhartiya Divas 2013 launched in Sydney, Australia.The Regional Pravasi Bhartiya Divas was officially launched on 11 November 2013 in Sydney, Australia by New South Wales, Premier Barry OFarrell and Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi. The conventions objective is to link the vast Indian diaspora and other parts of the Asia-Pacific region with India. 13. Indian Angel Network launches cross-border business plan contest.In a bid to draw a mix of investors and mentors from India and Pakistan and promote the development of cross-border businesses, Indian Angel Network has called for applications under its unique Indo-Pak initiative called ‘Startup Dosti’ — The Cross-Border Business Plan Competition. The programme is aimed at entrepreneurs and has been developed in partnership with the Karachi-London based SEED Ventures and the Washington DC-based Atlantic Council. 14. Malalas book banned as she represents West, not Pakistan. The memoir I am Malala written by Teen Pakistani activist Malala Yousufzai was banned from all private schools in Pakistan as she represented the West and not her native country, said the head of schools association. 15. Typhoon Haiyan made a landfall in northern Vietnam, close to the China border on 10 November 2013. It is the super typhoon which killed thousands of people in Philippines. The super typhoon destroyed large number of towns across Philippines and killed over 10000 people, according to the Philippines’ authorities. This was declared as the deadliest recorded natural disaster of Philippines. The United States, in the meanwhile, declared military help to Philippines. 16. Three astronauts returned to Earth today, following a 166-day mission, bringing the Olympic torch back from the International Space Station after a historic space walk. The trip completes the most ambitious leg of Russias unparallelled torch relay in the run-up to the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi next February. 17. Heena Sidhu became a part of the history by becoming the third Indian pistol shooter to win Gold at the World Cup Final on 10 November 2013 in Munich. In the Womens 10-metre Air Pistol event at the ISSF World Cup final, the 24-year-old shooter defeated World Champion Zorana Arunovic of Serbia to bag her first Gold. Prior to her, Anjali Bhagwat (2003) and Gagan Narang (2008) have won Gold at the rifle/pistol event in World Cup finals. 18. Indian mens hockey team finished fifth at the 3rd Asian Champions Trophy at Kakamigahara, Japan on 10 November 2013. In a fifth-sixth place match, India defeated Oman 6-1 by scoring at regular intervals in both halves of the game. Pakistan men and Japan women were crowned as the winners of the Asian Champions Trophy following victories over Japan and India respectively.
