how to grow a spruce tree from the cones :Instructions 1 Harvest spruce cones in September. Place them in a paper bag to dry for 60 days. You know the cones are dry enough when you shake the bag and the seeds fall from the cones. 2 Place the seeds into a ziplock baggie and put the baggie in a freezer until spring. 3 Remove the seeds at the beginning of April, and place them in water to soak for 24 hours. Set the seeds inside of a folded, wet paper towel, and put them back in the freezer until about May 15. 4 Add a small amount of water to a dish and put the seeds in. The water level should be enough to allow the seeds to soak up water but not be covered by it. Cover the dish with plastic wrap. Allow the seeds to germinate and grow for three weeks. 5 Prepare a 2-gallon pot with potting soil. Lay the seedlings on top of the soil, but do not cover them. Add a 1/4 inch of coarse sand on top of the seedlings. 6 Put the pot in a window that receives full sunlight. Water twice daily. Once the seedlings reach about 1 inch, fertilize them with a balanced fertilizer. Seedlings will be ready for transplant in the summer.
