ive never been around a cannery row or a meat packing plant. i grew up somewhat next to a railway of pass-throughs, track switches, and overlaps named for a merging of baltimore and ohio. there were no smells of rot and death just creosote and coal and dusty grain and in the morning the picture frames needed adjusted. when the eleven oclock was late i couldnt get to sleep until that calamitous rickety-rackety rocked me there. i never remember waking in the middle of the night from horns so loud the TV went silent until they passed. i never waited until the last second before jumping out of the way on my way to and from everywhere. i flattened a lot of pennies that could have been used for something else probably not half as amusing. i thought at times about hitching a ride but the conductors looked mean like they ate children between stops and i had been told about bad things. those rails just a door or so to the north were sure something else as was the city dump just a block to the east but thats another story.
