Biofertilizer is a substance which contains living microorganisms which, when applied to seed, plant surfaces, or soil, colonizes the rhizosphere or the interior of the plant and promotes growth by increasing the supply or availability of primary nutrients to the host plant. The main sources of biofertilizers are bacteria, fungi, and cynobacteria (blue-green algae). They add, fix, mobilize or solubilize the nutrient in simpler form which is easily use by plants. Classification of biofertilizers A simple form of classification of biofertilizers is given below: I) For Nitrogen Rhizobium for legume crops. Azotobacter l Azospirillum for non legume crops. Acetobacter for sugarcane only. Blue -Green Algae (BGA) and Azolla for low land paddy 2) For Phosphorous Phosphorus solubilizer: Pseudomonas, Bacillus VAM(Vesicu1ar-arbuscular mycorrhiza) 3) For Enriched Compost Cellulolytic fungal culture.
