when asked recently by someone infinitely more senior than me why i attend and play my music at unlicensed events i suddenly found so many reasons almost instantly. Its partly about being in a disused space that has never had a mass-music event in it before so it always feels like exploration instead of a tourist experience. But its mostly about just being able to let go of all the self-conscious stresses of going out; where it just doesnt matter if everything isnt perfect, and you cant blame anyone else because your presence there wasnt chosen for you. Where no one is going to issue an endless stream of consumer complaints for people not doing it in accordance with some trade-descriptions guideline, where no one cares how much your hairdo cost or what sunglasses youre wearing, or whether the pose youre striking is out of date or any of the other flippant concerns that result in the political-cesspit of entitlement-excuses that surround the beige world of commercial music and the people that inhabit it.
