yogajournal/practice/1383 I like this information on how to come into a twist in a yoga movement/ sequence. sometimes we get back pain due to weak muscles in the hips/ lower back that restrict us in bending and twisting movements. This can be due to either sitting on your butt all day atrophying the muscles through the year(s) or excessive and/ or improper lifting technique requiring bending and twisting. Definitely use props when possible such as a block or bolster otherwise gentle is the way to go. And definitely exercising to strengthen that group of muscles- do I hear squats and deadlifts anyone?
