한글/English -Bach and pedal, fantastic combination if we use it well.- Before jumping to conclusions about the use of piano pedal in Bachs keyboard music, lets go back to his time and imagine how Bach could have heard the sound of different keyboards. Bach has played most often in churches and cathedrals where the reverberation time of the sound was incredibly long and the organs sounded like thunder, grand, large and ample, it literally created sound waves. It is undeniable that this lengthy decay of the organs was Bachs daily sound. His other favorite instruments were clavichord and harpsichord which also have very rich harmonics sonorities. When you play Bachs music with these three instruments, you feel completely embraced and surrounded by its vibrant fullness. So the choc is quite intense when you play the same pieces on our modern piano because of its pure tone, or even some kind of dryness if it is played mechanically, everything staccato. The majestic music of Bach can sound only such as an exercise for fingers! Piano has an unsurpassable quality compared to these three instruments : It can make crescendo and diminuendo which is for me an essential part of sound breathing and phrasing, and most of all, make nuances, yay! You can transform the voices of a Fugue into lovely murmurs or into imposing declaration. Pedal is here to bringing you closer to the big and enveloping sound of organ while the clear tone of the piano can highlight the smallest detail. If you ask whether Bach would have liked our modern pianos, well, the only person that could have the answer.....is not here anymore! Lets not forbid anybody to play Bachs music on piano with or without pedal or on any other keyboard instruments. I believe that the message lays in the musical content and not in the external sound. Knowledge comes from outside while the wisdom is the brightness that enlightens from within. -Venerable Seongdam Sunim- 성담스님 --------- -바흐의 건반악기 음악에 페달을 잘 사용하면 환상의 콤비가 됩니다. - 페달이 바하의 건반악기음악에 쓰여질수 있는가 없는가의 대한 결정을 내리기 전에 바흐가 살았던 시대에 음악소리가 어떤 아쿠스틱에서 어떻게 그에게 들렸는지에대해 알아볼까요. 바흐는 대부분 대성당이나 교회에서 주로 연주를 하였습니다. 그곳들에서 음향이 울려퍼지는 시간은 놀랍게도 길었고 그가 사랑했고 하늘의 악기라고 불리우는 오르간의 소리는 천둥같이 퍼졌습니다. 어마어마하게 메아리치는 그 음향이 바흐가 항상 들었던 소리임은 확실하지요. 그리고 또 그가 사랑한 악기 하프시코드, 클라비코드는 모두 화성들이 풍부하게 조합이되어 울려치지요. 이 세 악기들을 연주할때면 그 음소리가 자신의 몸을 감싸는듯한, 꼭 음향안에 둘러싸인듯한 느낌이 들지요. 그래서 같은곡을 피아노에서 연주하면 갑작스런 피아노의 깨끗한 음색에 충격이 들지요. 더 나아가 만약 기계적으로 모든음을 스타카토로 연주한다면 이 거대한 바흐의 음악이 메마른 음향이 되어버리며 꼭 손가락을 위한 연습곡정도로 밖에 들리지가 않지요. 그러나 피아노는 하프시코드, 오르간 그리고 클라비코드가 가지고 있지않는 유일한 장점이 있지요. 바로 프래이징의 숨쉬기라고 할수있는 크레셴도, 디미뉴엔도, 음양조절이 가능하며 세밀한 뉘앙스를 표현할수 있다는 것입니다. 야호 ! 푸가의 성부들을 속삭이듯 연주할수록 있으며 엄숙한 외침으로 표현할수도 있지요. 페달은 그 웅장한 오르간의 음향을 따라갈수있게 도와주면서 피아노의 또렷함, 투명함, 세밀함은 가장 작은 디테일도 하일라이트할수 있게 해줍니다. 만약 바흐가 우리시대의 피아노를 좋아했을까 라고 물어본다면 그 정답을 아는사람은 한사람밖에 없겠지요....하지만 그는 이세상에 안타깝게 계시지가 않습니다. 그러니 바흐의 음악을 피아노로 연주할수 있는가, 페달사용할수 있는가, 금지하거나 허락하는 자세를 갖지 말지요. 왜냐하면 음향의 겉 미모 보다는 그 음안에 담겨있는 에센스, 메세지가 가장 중요한것이라고 생각되기 덕분이지요. 임현정 *** 말에 의지하지 말고 뜻에 의지하라 사람에게 의지하지 말고 법에 의지하라 지식에 의지하지 말고 지혜에 의지하라. 지혜를 한문풀이하면 지식과 같은자에 태양이 더 붙어져 있다. 그것은 지식은 밖에서 오는것이지만 지혜는 내 안에서 비춰나오는것이다. -성담 큰스님-
