17 Nov 1927--SOUTH OF TOWN --Mr. and Mrs. Tom Carey and son J. T., and Mrs. Jewel Robb and son Franklin and Forrest Atkins and Grandma Metcalf enjoyed an oyster supper at Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Atkins’ Saturday night. (Kathy’s notes: Franklin and Forest Atkins were Mrs. Jewel Robb’s brothers, not her sons.) 21 Dec 1923 -- ROBB – ATKINS - --Mr. Martin Robb and Miss Jewell Atkins, two of our popular young people, were united in marriage on December 15, 1923 in Fayette, at the home of the officiating minister, the Rev. J. M. Pearson, pastor of the Christian church. The bride is the pretty daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Atkins of south of town and is popular among a wide circle of acquaintances. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Miller Robb, also of south of town, and is looked upon as one of the vicinity’s most worthy and deserving young men as well as one of its most exemplary. The News joins other friends in congratulations and best wishes. (Transcription of the Old Higbee News by-Kathy Bowlin.) (ron’s note – Martin Robb, become known to us as “Tinker”. His father, Miller, was a brother to my Grandmother , Anne Belle (Robb) Dennis. i don’t think the young folk would truly under what an ‘oyster’ supper was back then. They were the testicles from a male hog. i never will forget the time Dale Kirby, who was and still is the President of the Rural Electric Coop in Howard County, had invited my daughters to sing while i played the guitar, at one of their public members yearly meeting. He told a joke that I shall never forget. He said that when he went on a business trip to France, that the dignitaries that he met with there, took him and his colleges out to eat at a very outstanding and popular place. So, when the Frenchmen came to visit Dale, he thought it would be very complimentary to treat them to a very special place to eat. As the Frenchmen were studying their menus, one of them ask what is Turkey Fries, Dale told him they were the testicles taken from a turkey gobbler. Another one of the Frenchmen, spoke up and said, what is Mountain Oysters? Dale, responded, they are the testicles taken from male hog. About that time the Frenchmen all noticed a selection called “French Fries”……. All three of them jumped up, and said…...” Lets Get Out Of Here ! “ )
