4.45 am we depart Berlin for Dubai for 2 nights, almost caught up with the blog back home on the 4th Friday 27th : Bit of sun about still cool good walking day in the morning went to the Gendarmenmarkt a large square surrounded with 3 historic buildings each end 2 matching Cathedrals ( Dom’s) centre a huge Concert hall (Konzerhaus). The Deuscher Dom no longer used as a church damaged in the war has been fully restored as just about all the historic buildings in Germany, The inside of this one is a concrete and steel it is a museum currently to parliament History of Germany hi tech displays 5 stories inside we were there a couple of hours, the other Dom was interesting it still is a Berlin French Cathedral still operating. A block away another church we looked at was St Hedwigs Kathedrale, a 1773 cathedral still in operation. We then to the Berliner Dom another 4 blocks away Started a a chapel 1465 the final cathedral completed 1905 it is the largest church in Berlin. Worked our way back to the hotel via the ‘Spittelleck” restaurant glad to hit the cot today after 7 hours walking our feet and legs were shot. Saturday 28th : Walked to Alexandraplaz shopping this morning visited a medieval part of the city that survived the war another old church there many of the old churches double as museums, that filled in the afternoon. On the way back the were road closures which was for a roller blade race around the city, must be a marathon weekend as on Sunday the BMW Berlin Marathon is also on Sunday. Sunday 29th : Todays mission to visit the Holocaust Museum beneath the memorial. We saw some of Berlin Marathon streets were closed but no delay we saw the leaders and a few groups go through were there 3 hours and felt we drained after its not confronting its all visual displays telling peoples stories their history from personal records it is compelling viewing it shows the climax of bigotry and racial hatred. Its not about how one country can commit genocide at a industrial level but how humans can in this case the Nazis. We ended up a having a late lunch of a Dona Kebab very nice, different than what we at home in a pocket of flat bread. Ran out of time to go to the Reichstag (parliament house) so headed to Potsdamer platz to see the landmark buildings there notably the Sony Centre but on the way as well were all the marathon runners some wearing plastic wraps and bling. Passing this wild looking building we investigated its the “Ottobock Science Center” its about research on the human body regarding mobility it is involved orthopedics and the technology to assist. The building design is based on muscle fibers then the Sony centre amazing.
