A taxi driver was charged today at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court with possession of a pistol and bullets, more than two weeks after he was held over the daylight killing of Arab Malaysian Development Bank founder Hussain Ahmad Najadi (pic) last month. Chew Siang Chee, 45, who has been in police custody since July 30, was charged under Section 8 of the Firearm Act 1971 which carries a maximum 14 years imprisonment and whipping for possession of a semi-automatic .9mm Walther pistol. The father-of-four was also charged under Section 4 of the same Act for illegal possession of four .9mm bullets. All the items were found at a post-box at Desa Cindaimas Condominium at Jalan Sekutu off Jalan Kuchai Lama in Brickfields on August 3. Chew pleaded not guilty to both charges. No bail was granted by judge Azwarnida Affandi. Deputy public prosecutors Wan Shaharudin Wan Ladin and Choo Hueay Ting prosecuted while the accused was represented by counsel Tey Wei Seng. Next mention date has been set on August 23. Hussain was shot dead in a car park at Lorong Ceylon in Kuala Lumpur on July 29, several hundred metres away from the bank headquarters. The 75-year-old was walking towards his vehicle with his wife when a gunman approached him and fired several shots at his back, killing him on the spot in the 1.30pm incident. His wife, Cheong Mei Kuen, 49, was injured after being hit on the hand and thigh. Closed-circuit television camera footage showed the assailant as a man wearing a long-sleeved check shirt and khaki pants. Police later identified the shooter as Kong Swee Kwan, or nicknamed Sei Ngan Chai. He is still at large.
