Article is published today (26-05-2014) in Qatar Tribune : Mamata Shankar and ballet troupe set to enthrall Doha SANTHOSH CHANDRAN ( QATAR TRIBUNE NEWSPAPER): INDIAN expat forum Bangiya Parishad will organise a contemporary innovative dance ballet at the DPS-MIS auditorium at Al Wakra on May 30. The programme titled Dance n Tunes in Desert Dunes will feature a modern Indian creative dance recital by the renowned dancer, choreographer Mamata Shankar with her ballet troupe, and contemporary Indian vocal music by Raghab Chatterjee. Speaking to Qatar Tribune, Forum President Jayati Maitra said, œThe ballet presented by Mamata Shankar and her 14-member team from India will reflect the outstanding talents of Indian dancers and offer an opportunity for the Doha audience to experience the beauty of contemporary dance in India. An accomplished dancer, choreographer and actress, Shankar has choreographed several dancedramas on wide-ranging contemporary themes for the last two decades. A true cultural icon, Shankar rose to fame in her own right with a new brand of creative ballet, following the footsteps of her father, the legendary Uday Shankar. She carries the legacy forward of the Shankar Gharana and her uncle, the late Sitar Maestro, Bharat Ratna, Pt Ravi Shankar. This is besides proving her mettle as a powerful actress in some of the more sensible movies of the last 3 decades under great directors like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and Rituparno Ghosh etc. Versatile singer Raghab Chatterjee got exposed to the world of music from childhood. He has a number of albums in Bengali which first made him popular, and numerous melodious renditions in Bengali films as playback singer. He has earned a name for himself with well-crafted songs in Hindi films like Devdas, Parineeta, Rain Coat, Well Done, Abba etc. Bangiya Parishad Qatar, a socio-cultural organisation under the aegis of Indian Cultural Centre has an excellent tract record in organising quality Indian cultural programmes since its formation in the 1990s, apart from encouraging local talents in the Indian community in Qatar. After a captivating show with Bollywood singer Shaan, the organisation aims to keep the tradition of promoting rich Indian culture in the Middle East. The programme will be attended by officials from the Indian embassy, Indian Cultural Centre and representatives of different sociocultural organisations.
