BIRTHDAY WISHES: Danny Seraphine was born on August 28, 1948 in Chicago, Illinois. Chicago native Danny Seraphine is not only a drummer, but also a record, theatrical, and film producer. He is the original drummer and founding member of the legendary rock group, Chicago, where his tenure lasted from February 1967 to May 1990. Dannys influences are as diverse as his style. They include Buddy Rich, Tony Williams, Mitch Mitchell, Elvin Jones and Grady Tate. Danny began playing at the age of nine after watching his uncle, who was a drummer, play at family gatherings. By the time he was 12, he was playing in a variety of rock bands. When he was 15, he met Walt Parazaider and Terry Kath (both future Chicago bandmates) at an audition. Later while studying percussion at DePaul University, Danny came into contact with several of the musicians who would later comprise the Missing Links, the forerunner of Chicago. After leaving DePaul, he continued with further study under Chuck Flores, who had played with Maynard Ferguson and Woody Herman. In 2006, Danny Seraphine launched his new band, California Transit Authority (CTA), which debuted their first CD, Full Circle, in 2007. In 2010, Seraphine published his autobiography, Street Player- My Chicago Story, and released his biographical/instructional DVD The Art of Jazz Rock Drumming produced by Drum Channel.
