Does this cut right across your gut sense of what the US Constitution was intended to constitute? This is a consequence of the ruling 4 years ago by the Supreme Court that the 1st Amendment to the US Constitution (free speech clause of the Bill of Rights) applies to corporations because corporations are persons under the law. This kind of case is going to become more frequent as the power of money moves the US further from our constitutive identity as a democratic republic and closer to becoming an oligarchy (a form of power structure in which power effectively rests with a small number of people)and, more accurately, a plutocracy (a society or a system ruled and dominated by the small minority of the wealthiest citizens).
