Don lost 4.3 lbs. overnight and the pants he couldnt get on before he went in the hospital are really loose on him now. He wore his skinny jeans last night and they were swimming around him. I can STILL see fluid retention in his feet and ankles, but not much. His breathing while asleep has been silent and NORMAL these last two nights! That has rarely happened in 53 years. The only other time I can remember when he hasnt snored with sleep apnea was once, when he went on a diet with me and lost weight to under 200 lbs. He now weighs 191.5. These are all great signs! However, he needs more protein! Getting enough into him, though, is a challenge with his fluid and sodium restriction. Blandness is a huge obstacle. He likes my protein shake, but that is way too much fluid as he is restricted to six 8 oz glasses a day and the shake is 12 oz. He does NOT like meat/poultry/fish without salt. Cheeses are mostly high sodium. I bought what low sodium cheese I could find, but he wont eat much of it at a time. I am putting gelatin powder in what liquids I can hide them in, but most of his liquids are water (to avoid sodium and to best satisfy his thirst) and plain water does not hide gelatin well. His one hot chocolate he thinks he has to have every morning is the one constant vehicle for gelatin. When he has oatmeal, it hides in there very well. He is challenging my skills. I am going see if he will agree to let me make him one of my shakes today for breakfast and let that replace the hot chocolate he thinks he has to have every morning. I will figure this out. If it werent for the appetite and gag factors, I could easily get the protein into him, but reality is what it is. He is not going for the protein shake. But I might be able to get him to eat three eggs without salt by adding a lot of onions and peppers. I can add gelatin to his hot chocolate and oatmeal. . . The sodium restriction is a bummer!
