FROM THE NEWSROOM: In Putnam, the $21.2 million combined budget proposal for the next fiscal year will be put to a public vote tonight. The annual town meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Putnam Middle School. The Board of Selectmen reduced the towns spending plan, which had originally included a tax increase, to a flat proposal after the towns Special Services District passed a budget with a 1.3 mil increase. The Board of Education has requested $16.9 million in funds for the schools, while the general government budget is pegged at $4.3 million. Taxpayers will also vote on a resolution that would allow up to $50,000 in revenue from gravel removal at the regional technology park and YMCA property to go into the newly established Economic Development Trust Fund. “From that trust fund, [the money would be used] specifically for the purposes of offsetting the costs of infrastructure in the park,” Cutler explains. Cutler says the net-cost of infrastructure has been estimated to cost near $800,000. “We might be able to get that net-cost down even more, if we are able to use the revenue generated by the sales of gravel to offset the costs the infrastructure costs in the regional technology park,” says Cutler. The towns five-year capital improvement plan and a $1.2 million capital appropriation will also be put to a vote. Tune in for the full report.
