From a fellow first responder (I stole this from him)... This also applies to EMS and Fire... As volunteers in Emergency Services, we are all aware of the importance of safety in our particular volunteer position. Whether we might find ourselves in the command post or out in the field, safety--our own and each other’s--is of the utmost importance. As the new year unfolds, we must now consider additional personal safety measures. In addition to procedures we use to protect ourselves from injury, we now more than ever must be aware of what our affiliation with the Sheriff’s Office may mean. Wearing our uniforms out in public, as well as displaying official emblems or logos on our personal vehicles, may draw unwanted attention to us. Because of events nationwide, first responders have become targets. Law enforcement especially has been the target of numerous threats, assaults, injuries and worse. We all must be aware of current situations and act accordingly. There have been no specific threats against any volunteers. Authorities, however, have put out a situational awareness bulletin, asking that law enforcement everywhere be aware that some individuals could target unsuspecting officers or their affiliates who display emblems on their personal vehicles. Be smart when out and about. If you are in uniform or in a departmental t-shirt, be aware of your surroundings and watchful for anyone who may be hostile toward law enforcement. The fact that you are a volunteer may not be apparent. Consider displaying logos and emblems on your vehicles only when at the scene of an incident. Use magnetic labeling or affixing emblems to something that can be concealed is another possibility. Conceal your uniforms in your vehicles, along with your gear. Although having your gear in your vehicle and visible is a best practice and a source of pride, it also has the potential to attract negative attention. Being safe doesn’t mean being paranoid. The vast majority of citizens support first responders. However, first responders must be safe. And in today’s day and age, increased situational awareness is part of volunteering with the Sheriff’s Office. Stay safe out there!
