From a social perspective, the danger of dissimulation is the effect it can have on self perception. By rewarding all behaviors regardless of relative quality or value, morale and self-esteem can be raised in those of dubious talent, but the ultimate result will be a suppression of the efforts of those who have chosen the route of quiet self-reliance. Its tragic to imagine the number of individuals in this country alone who would like nothing more than the satisfaction of a job well done, but are blocked from that pursuit by the jealous protection of prestige, which is all any technical job will seem to be for the average socially-motivated person. Prioritizing Social Smoothing has the unwanted side-effect of decreasing the impetus of doing well, and focus in comfort. For some situations a focus on comfort, and therefore social smoothing, is highly effective, but in others the social tendency to over-reward this behavior (presumably out of an overall fear of violence), will incorrectly inflate the self-importance of those who are valuable only in that they dont unsettle others. From this, you get the endless middle management pyramids. The Peter Principle and its reverse, perpetually shuffling individuals who are more than happy to provide smoothness at every turn in endless cycles with all pressure placed on poor hapless technical peons beneath. Ive got a couple of theories as to how the fabric of an organization could be rippled to prevent this, but as yet very little practical experience applying those ideas. I think one of the most enjoyable things about owning a profitable business of any type would be the opportunity to implement these dynamic in a challenge-based environment. Gaming can offer as certain amount of involvement, but in the end it serves primarily as a testing environment for strategies that might be useful in more tactile situations. My limited experiences in management have left me wondering what exactly would be possible if the unnecessary layers of corporate oversight could be removed, leaving only a direct interaction between the designers and producers of product, whatever it might be. If Brune keeps rolling along at this rate I may be able to learn from watching the players management styles and sifting through the data. Im fairly sure the information already gleaned is useful, but Im looking forward to seeing what kind of playerbase we have 3 months from now. ^_^
