How do you celebrate Earth Day? The White Earth Nation, Friends of the Headwaters and other community members gathered for a unique celebration at Itasca State Park. We explain why the threat of Enbridge’s Sandpiper Pipeline is bringing people together for this special day. Tribal member or not, many who care about this planet gathered at the Headwaters of the Mississippi. They’re here to observe Earth Day, but more importantly to support the fight to stop the Sandpiper Pipeline project, which they say will ruin Northern Minnesota’s natural resources. The ceremony started with a symbolic procession of veterans and children holding signs. Tribal leaders and representatives of Friends of the Headwaters and Honor the Earth spoke on the importance of protecting the environment for generations to come. This is the first time the Tribal Council hosted an event on Earth Day, and they hope they can make it a tradition for years to come. For many, the Headwaters is a significant place that holds great beauty and rich history. Today’s event, was an example of one cause bringing multiple groups together as one.
