Hulme is Where the Heart is ! The growth in Manchesters cotton and engineering industry, saw Hulme expand rapidly, the proximity of the area to the city centre saw thousands of people moving to the area as it was within easy walking distance to their place of work in town. Pronounced Hoom the population rose to 53,482 in 1851 - in 1801 the population stood at a mere 1,677 ! The population continued to increase with migrants who came in search of a better life. Within 100 years the majority of Hulmes 477 acres had been built over and the field boundaries were lost forever. In their place hundreds of two up two down, terraced houses were built and families from poorer areas with appalling housing conditions aspired to live in these new builds in Hulme.
