[In Chuson-ji, Kangyo Takuhatsu (religious mendicancy in winter) - TopicsExpress

[In Chuson-ji, Kangyo Takuhatsu (religious mendicancy in winter) has started - the beginning of the coldest season] January 6th is Shokan (the beginning of the coldest time of year) and on that day, the monks have started Kangyo Takuhatsu in Chuson-ji. At 5 pm, the monks left Chuson-ji for Hiraizumi Station through Motsu-ji Street. When the sound of Jirei (Buddhist bell) and trumpet shells echoed across the street, residents and passerby gave them offerings, then they put their hands together and chanted a sutra. Monks aged from his twenties to forties have continued to do this ascetic practice in winter for 10 years in Chuson-ji and it is one of winter features in Hiraizumi. The practice will be performed until February 3rd, the day before Risshun (the first day of spring).
