Many employees of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are engaged in protecting the Aransas National Wildlife Refuges Matagorda Island Unit. The Galveston oil spill that occurred on March 22, 2014, impacted approximately 25 miles of the 38-mile island. The refuge is the winter home of the endangered whooping crane. About half of the estimated 304 whooping cranes are still in the area preparing for their migration to Canada. Staff photo, courtesy of Jeff Adams; whooping cranes, courtesy of Steve Sykes.
