Not long after I talked to the war correspondent/nomad researcher, - TopicsExpress

Not long after I talked to the war correspondent/nomad researcher, I was talking to a young Malian guy at the Sleeping Camel. When I said I had been in Morocco before coming to Bamako, he said he was going to Morocco next week. Really? Where in Morocco? Rabat. Well, what are you going to do there? Buy a car. I do it all the time. Go to Morocco, buy a car, drive it to Bamako or Dakar, and sell it. Its a good business. Well, isnt that, like, 4,000 km. (2,500 m.) across the Sahara? I flew here at night, and I didnt see a single light for two hours. Oh, you dont go through the Sahara. You take the coast road down through Western Sahara and Mauretania, then east through Senegal and into Mali. Sounds like a lot of fun. How is Mauretania? It always seems like kind of a scary place to me. No, its no problem. You pay a fee at Douanes (customs). Its not much. Nouakchott is all right. It just takes a couple of days. This started me thinking. Maybe this could be the musical equipment pipeline for Mali. Buy a car in Morocco, load it up with strings, guitars and amplifiers, and drive it to Bamako. I wondered if Musicians Friend delivers to Morocco. They dont. OK, how about Musicians Warehouse in Dubai? They dont, either. They deliver to Egypt, but not Morocco. Hmm. So I would have to go all the way to Spain, buy a car in Malaga, find a music store, drive to Algeciras, get on the ferry to Tanger Med, then drive three days to Bamako. Doesnt sound like something you would do more than once, but it could happen.
