Regarding School Closings & Delays We know that Saturday school ranks right up there with having a root canal without Novocain. But we can’t control the weather, and as a public school system in North Carolina, we are bound by laws pertaining to the number of school days students must attend, when school can begin and when it can end. Bottom line… state laws do not give us a lot of flexibility regarding the school year calendar. State law requires students to attend school for 1,025 hours or 185 days. The school year in North Carolina cannot begin before Aug. 25 and cannot end after June 10. Other factors that we must consider when weather disrupts the school calendar include: - Weather forecasts for subsequent days of inclement weather - Protecting certain designated make-up days on the calendar (Spring Break days, for example) - The likelihood that we will experience more inclement weather. We still have to get through the month of February, which historically, can bring winter weather to our area. The Cabarrus County Board of Education approves the academic calendar, which includes designated make-up days (many of which are holidays), as well as the option to use Saturdays as make-up days instead of a designated day. Using a Saturday gives us a better chance of preserving the Spring Break holiday. Finally, we understand and acknowledge that the make-up day on Saturday, Feb. 1st may conflict with some families’ plans, and our principals and teachers will work with those affected to make-up missed work.
