So heres my thought on learning SQL Server. I grab a few publicly available data sets that hopefully have an element or two in common, load them into a few side databases (PostgreSQL, Oracle Express, Access (seriously, theres a demand for it)) and leave some as flat files. Some DBs will be local and some will be over my little hobby network. Architect a low complexity warehouse on the central SQL Server instance and use VB .Net, TransactSQL, Informaticas demo version, and direct connections to pull in the data from the sources and TransactSQL stored procedures to conform them to the warehouse structure. Snap on the 30 day demo copy of Crystal Reports and Business Objects to build a cube or two and some reports that tie the data sets together. Its ambitious, but if I can make this work, I should be able to test my mettle and pass a few certification exams along the way. And the best part of all of this is it comes to a grand total of free. *puts on goggles and mad scientist gloves* *laughs maniacally*
