Tech Tip: What you cant see can hurt you or cost $. The exhaust system can create a serious health problem, rob fuel economy and performance. The manufacturer designs the exhaust for efficiency, safety and performance. Some are very quiet, and aftermarket exhaust parts (not mass produced by the manufacturer) are designed to enhance performance and create a little noise. If your car/truck does not have the same performance and has not had the exhaust system checked, then a once over is always a good idea. When an engine runs poorly some techs or car owners blame the motor. In some cases that is true but a clogged catalytic converter or muffler will rob you blind. Here is a tip, one morning safely raise the car, use 2 jack stands with emergency brake set. Get under the car shake the exhaust system, normally rubber hangers will allow the tubing to move but only to a certain point. Look at the entire system and if you see blacks carbon marks then there is a possible leak, normally the muffler will start to fail internally. Where ever one tube is welded or joined or the catalytic converter is mounted is the location of most exhaust leaks. If there is usually noise from the undercarriage the exhaust system may not be properly secured. If you have a tech check the car, ask if you can watch, especially if he or she says, There is broken hanger, an exhaust leak or the muffler/catalytic converter is clogged. If you are not convinced ask the tech to prove his findings and compare the sound, feel, weight or looks of a good components. I recommend a second opinion if you have any doubts, because a complete exhaust system can cost as little as $250 to $1200. Finally, exhaust leaks can be harmful, after all exhaust produces carbon monoxide. So please have the exhaust system if you have any doubts, poor performance, and usually noises. Of course please check your owners manual and consult with your dealer...Hope this helps.
