Ten years ago, I would never have written this. I wouldnt have wanted to offend the educated minds who make editorial decisions at any of Canadas three 24-hour TV sports networks. But at this point in my career, I honestly dont give a rats hooey about offending them. Not that they care what I think anyway. There was an incredible Canadian university (CIS) football game played yesterday between Western and Guelph. One was ranked #4 in the country.. the other ranked #6. The home team (Guelph) scored 11 points in the final 76 seconds to win 49-46. A 41-yard field goal won it in the dying seconds to send the packed stadium into a frenzy. By all accounts, it was one of the most exciting CIS games ever. Yet while watching Canadas top-rated, 24-hour TV sports network this morning, I was able to determine that the game was, apparently, never played. Not a single highlight. Not a brief scoreboard. Not a word. Oh, there was a college football segment, alright. It featured highlights of six or seven (I lost count) NCAA games from Saturday. Including that monster Tulane @ Central Florida game.. which everyone in Canada had been discussing at coffee shops all week [/sarcasm]. I get it, TSN and Sportsnet. I really do. The CIS is nowhere near as glamorous as the NCAA. But please stop pretending you truly care about Canadian teams and athletes.. when you dont. Other than the teams in this countrys seven NHL cities, or the nine CFL teams, or Andrew Wiggins, or when the Olympics are on.. you care as much about promoting Canadian sport as ESPN does. You have unlimited money. Congrats. You have tons of resources. Good on ya. But Im sensing you are usually clueless when it comes to knowing what is truly happening in arenas, gyms or sports fields across this land. Thank goodness for regional TV. Sure, we know you sneer down on us from your ivory towers in the Centre of the Universe. We know you chuckle at our constant coverage of OHL, OUA, high schools and junior hockey. Frankly, we wouldnt have it any other way. Oops, gotta run. I see the English Premier Darts League is coming on (yet again). Cant wait to see if that cabbie from Leeds elects to toss for the Devil or the Double Top. Or something.
