The Milwaukee NWS radar. Left image: Default base reflectivity depicting precipitation (measured in DBZ) at the lowest radar scan, 1/2 degree above the horizon. I have turned off the smoothing (used on TV for a creamy appearance) to show the raw pixels. Right image shows winds on a radial velocity moving directly toward the radar. Base velocity measures all inbound/outbound movements. This differs from Storm Relative Velocity which is used to detect rotating storms (by eliminated the forward ground relative motion).
