The Ministry of Sport and Recreation South Africa pledges its support to the MultiChoice Diski Challenge. “The launch of the MultiChoice Diski Challenge has given youth development through sport the much needed impetus. Incipient in this strategic initiative is its cataclysmic effect between the anvil of grassroots development of sport and professional sporting pathways”. This statement was made by the Minister of Sport and Recreation SA, Mr Fikile Mbalula as he congratulated the Premier Soccer League and Multi-Choice on the occasion of the launch of the Multi-choice Diski Challenge. The Minister’s statement follows on the foot-steps of MultiChoice’s ground-breaking multi-pronged Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme aimed at supporting development in football and broadcasting today. The programme, called the MultiChoice Diski Challenge, includes a football competition for the Premier Soccer League (PSL) academy clubs; life skills and leadership development for players; an internship programme to develop broadcasting skills amongst the youth; scholarships for players and production interns; as well as a chance for community television channels on DSTV to broadcast the MultiChoice Diski Challenge matches. The MultiChoice Diski Challenge flagship corporate responsibility programme rests on three key pillars: • A 16-team development league in partnership with the PSL which will fast track the development of young players into the PSL league • Life skills and leadership development of the young players • Up to 43 internships for aspiring content producers at SuperSport gaining on field experience in broadcasting, running a weekly magazine show, as well as an opportunity to receive academic scholarships “This initiative is in concert with the National Sport and Recreation Plan that enjoins all role-players to nurture young people from early childhood, through grass roots developmental phase to high performance levels. This is a much needed intervention to close the gaps inherent in the delivery of sport as it creates bridges between the developmental and high performance trajectory. In addition, we are witnessing the long awaited synergy between academic and skills training, on the one hand, sport and recreation on the other. What is more encouraging is the combination between sport and non-sport programmes to safeguard the nascent players, mould wholesome individuals and build future leaders through sport. The fact that this programme create youth internship programmes, prospective careers in production, broadcasting, field experience, career pathways, academic scholarships, leadership and life-skills, is indeed a game changer that addresses the economics of sport in a poignant way”. Added Mbalula. Let us continue and redoubling our efforts of building, an active nation, a playing nation and winning nation!!! Said the Minister of Sport and Recreation SA. End!
