The email says: Spring is officially here, and farms and gardens across Maine will soon be filled with delicious fruits and vegetables. But heres a scary fact about our states food: Maine imports more of our food than any other state in the continental United States. My friend Tom Dennen, who once rode from Sweden to Paris with me on motorbikes, says A little rain on the parade - three years ago I spent a year in Maine away from South Africa (where Im shooting at similar targets like local food sovereignty) and revelled in the fact that I could buy pineapples, paw-paws, bananas, Kiwifruit, pomegranates, cashew and macadamia nuts plus a host of other exotic fruits, nuts and veggies from all over the world that Im used to down at the local Brunswick supermarket. I spent that year lobbying an unsuccessful Gubernatorial candidate to Consider a Bill introducing state-bank-based economy along the lines of North Dakota that with 600k people shows an annual budget surplus of over a $1bn (the only state in the black) against Maine with twice as many people and a $1bn annual deficit. With a state bank and a budget surplus, Maine farmers would be free to pursue whatever they wanted to in a free market economy... Tom I have asked my legislators about starting a Maine bank. You can believe that millions of dollars would suddenly appear to lobby against anything that would keep money circulating in Maine and not whisked off to Arkansas or the Cayman Islands.
