There is something so peculiar about decision-making. It has a common feature that is applicable to all strata of action taking. That unique feature is the short-run and long-run decisions and their effects. The short-run’s got to do with taking the easy way out in the face of a daunting circumstance; while the long-run has to do with putting round pegs in round holes and facing the challenge squarely, even when it seems initially bitter. The short-run yield a momentary but transient ameliorating results; while the long-run yields a long-lasting and indelible result. I find it difficult to vote during elections because almost everyone that comes out to campaign has the same pattern of agenda presentation - Share-the-salt-let –the-people-jubilate agenda. The most saddening fact is that, every transitional period, the people keep making the same circular mistake. They fail to get politically educated. Rather than being meticulous about what comes out of a campaigner’s heart into his/her mouth, then into their ears, they are rather enveloped by the shallow fantasy of the inconsequential relieves the shared freebies brings to them. All they watch out for is, what comes out of whose pocket after his/her non-articulated speech. They fail to read between lines of pronouncements being made. One of such processes is what has culminated in the present breeds of national policy and decision makers in the legislative representation chambers, who have exhausted all items on their agenda. They are done with curbing general national indiscipline, eliminating the scourge of corruption, eradication of low educational standards, enhancement of general codes of conduct and many other items on their pates. Now, they are jobless and they are trying hard to create jobs for themselves by seeing how a subsidiary stage for wrestlemania need to be setup here in Nigeria (precisely the garden city) and by bringing to table, localized domestic topics such as, who should marry who and at what age. CHILD MARRIAGE is now the topic of the day (Marriage of girls who cannot even clean up to 30% of the stains on their undies) . They are now trying to help parents take domestic decisions for their children/wards. Nigeria is now reaping in the long-run, the gains of adverse short-run decisions taking by her citizens sometimes ago. I pray that these crops of legislative representatives don’t exhaust these new agenda in no time and then start jumping in resolving how individuals should place and dress their beds and what all and sundry need take for breakfast before leaving his house in the morning. Because that would be tantamount to vividly reenacting the plots of George Orwell’s NINETEEN-EIGHTY FOUR in Nigeria’s modern democracy.
