THE TRAIL OF BLOOD On a dark night under the dim streetlights, a policeman walked and patrolled around the village, doing his nightly rounds around the place to check for trouble makers; mostly young drunk boys, who usually disturbed the peace of the neighbourhood with their mischief in their drunken stupor. And since was during the festival season, he was more alert than usual, evident in the way he tightly gripped his cane. But tonight did not seem to be one of those nights as there were no signs of life as he walked his beat, pouring the light of his big flashlight onto all areas he came close to. As he was finishing his night patrol and returning home, he all of a sudden heard footsteps which seemed to come from the jungle along the side of the road. It grew closer and louder as time went by and heshone his flashlight onto the jungle bushes and shouted oudly, beckoning the source of the sounds to reveal itself. The bushes rustled and the policeman tried his best not to be intimidated but he was infact a little apprehensive to approach it, but mustered up all his courage and went up to the bushes and parted it. A small figure appeared. It was a relief for him as he realized it was only a small girl who seemed to be lost in the woods; and felt stupid being scared of confronting it sooner. The face of the small girl gave an expression of worry; and the policeman inquired why she was so. She told him that he lost his elder sister Apila in the woods when they were playing and that she tried to find her way back home but was lost. Bongdi, the policeman asked the girl after inquiring her name, can you show me the way the both of you went to play in the woods? The little girl nodded with her big, sad eyes fixed on the policeman and lead the way. The policeman called up his colleague and told him to patrol the area designated by him. The other policeman agreed. After a while, the other policeman called him up, saying that he had found the other sister. The policeman informed the younger sister and she was overjoyed at the sound of the good news. He took her to reunite her with her sister. The two walked on, and suddenly when the policeman shone his flashlight on one place, his eyes were met with the sight of blood, fresh blood gleaming as light was shone on it. Bongdi looked scared and the policeman held her closer to comfort her. They followed the trail of blood through the thick jungle as it snaked across the leafy floor, sliding through roots and stones. The pair finally reached a place where the blood stopped its winding route and they looked around, hoping clues would help them locate the elder sister. Apila, shouted Bongdi, pointing towards two figures in the distance. It was indeed a girl and the other policeman, who was kneeling, facing away from them. The relieved policeman along with Bongdi approached them. The policeman put his hand on his friends shoulder; patting and congratulating him on his good job of finding the missing sister. But as he patted his shoulder, his friends body fell to the ground, lifeless and covered in blood. The policeman stood there, frozen with shock, as the two girls grew fangs and pushed him to the ground, and sucked all his blood out of his body.
