This is one reason I dig Scott Lynch. Im reading (and loving) Republic of Thieves, and theres a scene where a rape situation puts several characters in a difficult fix. (Trying not to spoiler.) As theyre discussing it, one of the men says they could have been spared the trouble if the victim had just let it happen. Not only does SL make sure to show that all the women present are appalled, but he has one of the other men confront the guy and tell him hes being a despicable ass. Then the first man agrees and apologizes. Its cool to be a feminist by writing excellent female characters (which SL does), but its next-level to put it into the flow of your writing like that. And it was so neatly done that it took me a minute to realize why the scene felt unexpected. :->
