Top 10 Most Successful Movies of 2013 ( by EROSMAN ) 10. Thor: The Dark World $639.6 million Like the year before (also with 3 spots out of the top 10), 2013 has been a good one for superhero movies. Thor: The Dark World is the latest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a major improvement at the box office over the original Thor and its $449.3 million. 9. Man of Steel $668 million Regardless how you or me might perceive this movie quality wise, it was a hit and without that success we would not have a Justice League movie on the way. They might not have confirmed it yet, but come on, we all know that’s what Warner Bros. are making. Not to mention they can’t really call it The Dark Knight Returns now, can they. 8. Gravity $703.8 million There’s a good chance Gravity might win the Oscar for Best Picture this Sunday, making it the first top 10 grossing movie in a decade (since The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) to take the award home. Only one movie can interfere with the plan, 12 Years a Slave, who’s in 56th place for 2013 worldwide. 7. Monsters University $743.6 million 2013 has been one of the best years ever for animations, with 3 out of the 10 movies on here (almost had a 4th with The Croods, now in 11th with $587.2 million). If Monsters University, a Pixar endeavor, ended up the least popular of the 3, you can guess those other animations must be absolutely huge (and they are, in 3rd and 2nd place). 6. Fast & Furious 6 $788.7 million Besides James Bond, as far as I know Fast and Furious is the only other franchise that has been consistently earning more money with each subsequent release for at least 3 movies. In order to achieve a feat like that, one must do a lot of things right, which Universal absolutely did starting with the 2009′s Fast and Furious. 5. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire $863.5 million Look at how insanely competitive 2013 has been overseas if the highest grossing movie of the year domestically is only 5th worldwide. Considerably bigger then its $691.2 million predecessor, Catching Fire showed promising growth around the world so there’s a good chance Katniss might be in a $1 billion movie by the time her series is over. 4. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug $893.8 million The Lord of the Rings movies have made so much money in the past that even a gross as high as this one might look like a slight disappointment. It’s crazy, I know. But keep in mind, The Desolation of Smaug is still making money, having just opened in China and on its way to Japan this week. It will end up anywhere from $950 to $980 million, so only around a 5% drop from An Unexpected Journey ($1,017 million). 3. Despicable Me 2 $970.8 million This animated sequel ended up earning $427.7 million more the Despicable Me 2. As far as direct sequels go I can count on one hand the ones that saw a bigger bump (The Dark Knight, Toy Story 3 and Shrek 2). A little note here, Despicable Me 2 might eventually drop to 4th place on here, if Smaug continues on its path of destruction in China and Japan. 2. Frozen $985.1 million The surprise hit of the year and probably the animation of a new generation, Frozen has turned into a worldwide phenomenon in the last 3 months. More than anything this is proof that you don’t need a sequel to reach such box office heights. Soon enough Frozen could become the highest grossing animation of all time worldwide (it’s in Japan’s hand), and if not, then it will at the very least be the 2nd biggest. 1. Iron Man 3 $1,215.4 million Drums rolled and to no ones surprise Iron Man 3 ended up being the number one movie of the year worldwide. After The Avengers took $1.5 billion in 2012 and this essentially acting like a direct sequel/spin-off to that, it was a no-brainer really.
