Traffic On Sgr-Jmu Highway Disturbed, Thousands Stranded Thousands of Passengers are stranded on Srinagar-Jammu highway as they are not being allowed to move towards Jammu keeping in view the opening ceremony of Qazigund-Banihal railway line by the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. “The traffic on the highway will be allowed only after the Banihal function is over,”an official told Kashmir Life. “The authorities should have announced a day earlier that they will not allow any kind of traffic on the highway on Wednesday, but this is an utter irresponsibility on part of the traffic department due to which we are suffering,” a driver carrying tourists and stranded somewhere between Wanpoh and Qazigund said on phone. Sources said that all the passengers who left Srinagar on Wednesday morning are stranded on the highway and they mostly include the tourists. Meanwhile, all the schools in the Srinagar city are closed for the second consecutive day Wednesday, though no separatist organization has called for any strike. “There were many areasin the city under strict restrictions when our drivers went to fetch the students in the morning so we decidedto keep our institutions closed,” principal of one of the leading private schools told KL. PM and UPA chairperson have to inaugurate the Qazigund-Banihal railway line which is comprised of a 10.9 km long railway tunnel, the second longest in Asia. This will be the concluding function of PM’s sixth visit of Jammu and Kashmir. PM and Congress president will fly to Udhampur army base camp from Banihal where from they will be takingtheir special flight to New Delhi.
