Using a dictionary While there is definitely humor in the image I posted earlier, I am a total advocate for using a dictionary. I try to teach the children I work with how to use a dictionary early on, hoping that it will create independence and comfort as they get older. Using a dictionary has become so easy these days as there are so many different dictionaries available including online versions as well as the good old-fashion book version. If you feel that your child is too young, there are variations of a dictionary that can help them be more independent. For example, younger children who are just learning to write can use spelling dictionaries. These can be a great resource for young spellers because they contain the most commonly used words in children’s writing. Using a dictionary helps with a variety of skills including: - alphabetization, - attaining the proper spelling of a word, - accurately defining words, - pronouncing the word - learning syllables of a word, - leaning the meaning of a word, and - learning synonyms and antonyms. I cant stress enough the importance for children of ALL ages to learn how to use a dictionary. Just remember to find the most appropriate dictionary based on your childs age and reading level.
